Quantitative Trading Recruitment in New York
Specialist search across quantitative research, systematic trading, engineering and trading technology for firms hiring in New York and the wider US.
New York is currently our most active search market, spanning quantitative investment firms, proprietary trading businesses, market makers and technology-led trading teams across the wider US.
We specialise in searches where research depth, technical ownership and commercial impact matter more than keyword matching.
01
The New York quant talent market
A large proportion of the relevant candidate pool in New York is passive. The people firms most want to hire are typically well compensated, working on interesting problems and rarely relying on job boards. Reaching them is a sourcing and credibility problem before it is a selling problem.
Competition is no longer only between hedge funds, proprietary trading firms and market makers. AI research organisations and large technology companies compete for the same engineers and machine learning researchers, often with a different compensation shape and a very different working culture.
Restrictive covenants set the timetable. Non-competes and garden leave of several months are routine at the senior end, and deferred compensation frequently determines when a move is realistic rather than whether it is desirable. Serious searches are planned around those dates from the outset.
For senior research and portfolio-management hires, the path from first conversation to start date can run for months, particularly where non-competes, garden leave or deferred compensation apply. Firms that plan around those timelines have access to a materially wider talent pool.
Relocation into New York remains common, particularly from Chicago, the Bay Area and London, but it needs honest handling: compensation comparisons across those markets are not like-for-like once tax, cost of living and deferral structures are taken into account.
Technical calibration is the final constraint. Firms differ sharply on what they mean by research ownership and individual impact, so we agree the standard with the client before sourcing rather than discovering it at final stage.
